I love Christmas almost as much as I love Dragonette, so I’m deliriously thrilled that the Toronto electropop trio has shimmied down the chimney early to deliver a new song, “Merry Xmas (Says Your Text Message).” Though since Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October, Martina, Dan, and Joel are well within their rights to deck the halls now if they want to.
“We love everything about Christmas-time and the Drinking Season in general except hearing the same 10 songs over and over again,” Dragonette explains. “So here’s one you’ve never heard before… ’cause it’s brand spankin’ like a freshly unwrapped pair of new long-johns. Hope this song warms up your winter spirit!”
“Merry Xmas (Says Your Text Message)” has a cheery sound, but like some of the season’s best chestnuts (see “Last Christmas”), it’s no ode to fluffy snowflakes and shiny sleigh bells. It’s a Christmas kiss-off to a real cad who deserves a giant lump of coal in his stocking. No matter. I’ll still be trimming my tree to Dragonette’s holiday ditty when I drag the decorations out from storage in a couple of weeks.
There’s also an explicit version “for those who have been naughty,” Dragonette says.
Dragonette – “Merry Xmas (Says Your Text Message)” is out on November 20.
