With today’s debut of the music video for “Wait,” M83 wraps up their Fleur & Manu-directed trilogy about a band of telekinetic kids.
“Midnight City” introduced us to these preteens’ superpowers back in October 2011, with the second (and more violent) sequel, “Reunion,” arriving in May. As I surmised then, there was more to come. In “Wait,” having instigated/witnessed massive destruction, the kids climb aboard their pyramidal spacecraft to jet back home. Neither the ride nor re-entry looks easy, but the whole clip is wonderfully shot and edited.
We consume content so very differently today, and our attention spans are arguably shorter than ever, but artists like M83 and Lana Del Rey are ushering in a new era of epic music videos. I welcome the return to more expansive creative approaches. Going long might be the new way to stand out.
