Breath From Another

Janice Robinson, the vocalist behind Livin’ Joy’s club classic, “Dreamer,” released just one solo album, 1999’s criminally overlooked The Color Within Me.  At the time, the pop-rock set was difficult to categorize, delving into R&B, funk, and even country, but today sounds like a precursor to the kind of fusion that P!nk now practices to acclaim.

Robinson has since kept busy behind the scenes, writing songs for Kristine W, Taylor Dayne, Ashley Tisdale, and Frenchie Davis (“Love’s Got A Hold On Me,” currently #19 on the Billboard Dance chart). On rare occasion, she’s stepped back in front of the mic, including new versions of “Dreamer” in 2005-06 and her 2010 team-up with David Morales, “I Make You Gaga.”

While that stomping track was something of a novelty, Robinson’s latest collaboration, “Every Breath,” comes via producers John Dahlbäck and Greg Cerrone and is much more personal. She wrote the lyrics with her late father in mind. “This is for my daddy, the late Rev Dr. JJ Robinson,” she posted on Facebook. “‘Daddy, my love for you is making kids dance all around the world…I miss you like crazy…'”

Dahlbäck and Cerrone have outfitted her heartfelt remembrance — a prayer, really — with a tough electro sound, evidence that Robinson still doesn’t shy away from mixing the unexpected. “This is what you rock out to on the dance floor at 2am,” she tweeted.

Robinson may have written “Every Breath” as a song to save her life, but many others will no doubt find solace in her words when hearing them ring out in a crowded club. Listen to samples of the Original Mix and Lucky Date Remix:
