While 2012 brought a bumper crop of new music from familiar faces, several new artists kicked off their career this year.
Bursting on the scene with her bold debut single, “Famous,” Katy Tiz was quick to assert that her (naughty) tongue is planted firmly in cheek on the tune. But it’s no joke that the London-born reggae and R&B-loving pop talent is poised to become a household name next year — if the Mayans don’t ruin the fun for the rest of us.
Having spent much of 2012 in the U.S. away from her family and friends, Tiz returned to London for the holidays. Before she packed her bags, she shared her five favorite tracks of 2012 with Popservations, the year’s biggest highlight, and what she’s plotting for 2020.
Katy Tiz’s 5 Favorite Tracks of 2012:
Maroon 5 – “One More Night”
Kanye West feat. Big Sean & Jay-Z – “Clique”
Rihanna – “Diamonds”
Usher – “Climax”
Chris Brown – “Turn Up The Music”
Memorable moment from 2012:
“The moment I was offered my deal by Lava/Republic, I fell off the sofa like Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding. Then cried like a baby for about a week. Dreams come true.”
Coming in 2020:
“A lot! This is just the beginning (evil laugh) and I’ll be back, performing for you all. AAAAAAAAAAAH CAN’T WAIT! I have sooooo much material that I can’t wait to share with you.”

Read my recent interview with Katy Tiz here. She wasn’t kidding about loving “old school R&B from a few years back,” as her Spotify playlist proves.
