With just hours to go before the start of The 55th Grammys, one can’t help but remember that tomorrow it will have been a year since Whitney Houston passed away. Her memory and music lives on, but I still can’t quite fathom that The Voice has been silenced forever, and much too soon.
Twenty-seven years ago this week, Whitney climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with “How Will I Know,” the third single from her 1985 self-titled debut. Her second consecutive #1 hit, she would rack up five more in succession, a record that still stands today.
The most expressly pop single of Whitney’s entire career, the universal theme of “How Will I Know” has made for some wonderful covers, including these two relatively recent interpretations.
Stockholm trio Postiljonen (Daniel Sjörs, Joel Nyström Holm, Mia Bøe) takes “How Will I Know” to the clouds above with a dreamy midtempo makeover that’s reminiscent of M83 (but with female vocals).
I haven’t been able to confirm the genesis of the “All That We Had Is Lost” bits heard in Postiljonen’s cover of “How Will I Know” — I assume them to be the band’s own creation — but they add an appropriately wistful tinge in Whitney’s memory, as does the mournful sax.

Another trio, Brooklyn-via-San Francisco outfit POP ETC (formerly The Morning Benders) covered “How Will I Know” just before Christmas. Frontman Chris Chu takes the trio’s sweetly innocent take to the streets of Tokyo for the video.
