Janet Gets Rejiggered Again

February 16, 2013 0 Comments

Nearly five years have passed Janet Jackson last released an album, 2005’s Discipline, and three years since her last new single, “Nothing,” from the soundtrack to Why Did I Get Married Too?, the 2010 Tyler Perry film in which she starred.

I’m fine with waiting a while, but I miss her much. Hopefully, she’s holed up in a studio with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, recapturing that Flyte Tyme magic. Or maybe Miss Janet is getting nasty with Dev Hynes’ retro-new vibe when he’s not on stage supporting Solange.

Following up my Janet Gets Rejiggered post from six months ago, here are two more new remixes of music from her back catalogue, both from 1993’s Janet.

Montreal’s Kaytranada brings a boudoir vibe to “If.” In the original, Jam and Lewis gave Janet’s bedroom fantasies a fierce dressing-up — tough jeep beats, hard-rock guitar, and a Diana Ross & The Supremes sample — and some missed just what she was on about. With Kaytranada’s remodel, Janet’s dirty-minded thoughts are clear as day.

This week, the reliably brilliant Peter Rauhofer shared his new remix of “Throb” (originally remixed by the also-reliably brilliant David Morales). I thought its appearance might portend a new project coming from Janet, but no such announcement has arrived. But as we continue to wait, Rauhofer’s revamp of “Throb” sure is a tasty treat. Damn, baby:
