The devil you don’t know

Forget Gossip Girl. The CW show that everyone should be talking about is Reaper.

Bret Harrison (last seen in Fox’s brilliant-but-canceled The Loop) plays Sam Oliver, a slacker who skipped college and has a dead-end job at The Work Bench (think Home Depot). On his 21st birthday, Sam discovers his parents have been keeping a major secret from him since birth: They sold his soul to the Devil.

Now there’s hell to pay, as Satan (the perfectly suited Ray Wise of Twin Peaks) comes to collect the debt. Sam must work as his bounty hunter, capturing souls who have escaped from the underworld. Armed with a new “vessel” each week (first a Dirt Devil vacuum, then a toaster), Sam enlists the help of his friends “Sock” and Ben, Work Bench-mates who accompany him on his missions as the reluctant Reaper.

Reaper is a worthy watch, though a bit confounding to categorize. The show features plenty of comedy (goofy and dark), a dose of the supernatural (particularly when the boys are bounty-hunting), and even a little romance (Sam’s crush on co-worker Andi, who’s unaware of his side gig with Satan). Each episode is a just-right mix of the above.

Since I’m sure a few of your favorite shows are in reruns because of the continuing writers’ strike, why not give Reaper a look? Tune in Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on The CW (until late February, that is, when Reaper moves to Thursdays at 8:00 pm).

For what it’s worth, I did give Gossip Girl a chance, but even my undying devotion for Kristen Bell (who voices the titular narrator) wasn’t enough for me to get invested in its rich-kid shenanigans. (The O.C. was a friend of mine, Gossip Girl. And you’re no The O.C., even if you do share the same creators. XOXO, John.)
