She said she’d always love you, that she’d be your shelter, baby. But after a string of chart success in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Taylor Dayne left the music world mostly behind to try her hand at acting. After a few film roles, she headed to television, appearing in the Showtime series, Rude Awakening (co-starring my senior-year crush, Sherilyn Fenn). Then Dayne hit the Broadway stage in Aida.
She focused on pop music again in 1998 with a new album, returning to the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart with remixes of “Whatever You Want” and “Naked Without You.” By 2002, she had two more club smashes to her credit: “Planet Love” (which hit #1) and “How Many,” both pulled from movie soundtracks. She capitalized on that success by signing with BMG, but soon after the label merged with Sony, Dayne was released from her contract.
Now, some 20 years since “Tell It To My Heart,” the powerhouse voice is back with Satisfied, her first studio effort in a decade (and just her fifth full-length). The first single, “Beautiful,” perfectly captures Dayne’s former pop persona. As she once predicted, love may very well lead us back.
As for the accompanying video, it’s about as straight as a circle. Must be Taylor Dayne’s valentine to the boys who paid her bills during these in-between years:
Sure, it’s not much of a concept, but I’m not complaining.
