Well, that didn’t take very long at all.
Pet Shop Boys, who released their 11th studio album, Elysium, last September, are following up with an all-new set, Electric, in June.
Actually while promoting the more subdued Elysium last fall, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe were already hinting that a dance album was on the not-too-distant horizon. Electric is produced by studio wizard Stuart Price (Madonna, Kylie Minogue), who crafted the radio edit of Pet Shop Boys’ last single, “Memory Of The Future.”
Electric is already making history. It will be the first Pet Shop Boys release not on Parlophone Records in 28 years. Since signing to the venerated label in 1985, Tennant and Lowe have charted four UK number ones and 42 Top 30 singles, making them the most successful UK duo in music history. Pet Shop Boys have signed a global deal with Kobalt Label Services.
“This is a very exciting point in our careers,” say Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe in a statement. “We are hugely proud of the new album and are very pleased to be working in conjunction with Kobalt. We’d like to thank everyone we’ve worked with at Parlophone over the last 28 years both in the UK and abroad. When we signed to the label in 1985 we had no idea how long and successful a relationship we were embarking on. However it is also exciting now to commence a new phase working with a new team in a new business structure and we look forward to a creative and equally fulfilling relationship with Kobalt.”
One relationship that will be carried over is Pet Shop Boys’ collaboration with Farrow Design, which sent this congratulatory tweet: “Looking forward to working on new album Electric.”
Based on the album trailer below, I bet there are plenty Petheads looking forward to hearing it.
Pet Shop Boys kick off their Electric Tour next week in Mexico. No U.S. dates have yet been announced.
