Kathleen Edwards covers Roxette

RoxetteItMustHaveBeenLoveIn an interview with The Scotsman last year, Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards recalled that Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love” was the first record she ever bought.

This year, Edwards’ covered the Swedish duo’s 1990 #1 hit for the series finale of ABC’s medical drama (and Grey’s Anatomy spinoff) Private Practice.

Her melancholic rendition of the smash Pretty Woman ballad had its first airing in January, with a standalone single released after Valentine’s Day, appropriately enough.

I didn’t know until today that “It Must Have Been Love” wasn’t written specifically for the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Roxette originally released the song three years earlier as “It Must Have Been Love (Christmas For The Broken Hearted).” With a simple switch of lyric (replacing “It’s a hard Christmas day” with “It’s a hard winter’s day”) and freshening up the original production, Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson scored their third #1 and biggest U.S. hit.
