Last night on American Idol, during Kelly Clarkson‘s onstage meet-and-greet with Mariah Carey after performing new single “People Like Us,” the singers’ mutual lovefest turned to the denim outfit that Kelly sported during her original Idol audition over 10 years ago.
“[Your] ensemble was very ‘Heartbreaker’ video with the jeans,” Mariah remarked to Kelly, who responded, “It was also very heartbroken and poor!”
The lead single from Mariah’s seventh studio album, Rainbow, “Heartbreaker” is one of my favorites from Carey’s career, with much credit given to Jay-Z’s playful rap. (How surprised was I at the time to my response? Very.)
Debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 4, 1999, “Heartbreaker” reached the top spot a month later, securing Carey her 14th #1 hit on the chart. The music video, directed by Brett Ratner, is still one of the most expensive ever filmed. I guess Jerry O’Connell doesn’t come cheap.
