Tonight, cities around the world are celebrating Earth Hour, an effort organized by the World Wildlife Fund to focus attention on energy conservation and its effect on climate change.
From Sydney to Chicago, lights will turned off at homes, businesses, and landmarks from 8:00 to 9:00 pm. Organizers admit the global event is largely symbolic (the total impact on energy consumption will likely be minimal), but it will serve as a grand example of what’s possible when folks come together. Judging by the Earth Hour coverage on Chicago stations, it’s an already successful one.
Sign up, and dim all the lights at eight tonight. As for what to do during your hour of darkness, might I suggest a candlelit dance party? Create a “Light to Dark” themed playlist, starting with this 1984 hit from Peter Wolf (which reached #12):
I’ve read that “Lights Out” was originally titled “Dancing In the Dark.” After Wolf heard Bruce Springsteen was coming out with a song of the same name, he changed his title to avoid confusion.
