The lineup to 2008’s Lollapalooza was officially unveiled today. While news outlets were buzzing about headliners Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West, and Wilco, a look further down the impressive list had me wondering if festival mastermind Perry Farrell picked up some of these names after reading Popservations.
Among the 90 acts scheduled to perform during the three-day extravanganza in Chicago’s Grant Park this August are eight artists recently featured on this blog: Lupe Fiasco, Mark Ronson, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Duffy, MGMT, Black Kids, Nicole Atkins & the Sea, and The Ting Tings. (Follow the links to read my takes on this diverse group of guys and gals.) The inclusion of Lupe is a no-brainer, of course (he’s a Chicago son, after all). But Black Kids, Nicole Atkins, and The Ting Tings? The Windy City just got way cooler.
Though I live in Chicago, Lollapalooza’s home since 2005, I haven’t been to the festival since 1992. That year, a relatively unknown Pearl Jam took the stage early in the day, while headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers wowed the crowd after donning flaming helmets that night. After seeing what’s in store August 1-3, the time might just be right to fall for Lolla all over again.
With Thom Yorke & Co. topping the bill, I’m sure tickets will go fast.
