The boys of Capital Cities sure are busy. Currently on tour, the Los Angeles duo has just released a new music video (more on that in a minute) and their debut album, In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery, is on deck for June 4.
And that’s not all. Capital Cities found time to record the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive.” As with previous covers of “Holiday” and “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian’s take on the disco classic from 1977’s Saturday Night Fever, is anything but a carbon copy.
“One of the beautiful things about a melody is that its emotional impact is not set in stone,” Capital Cities shares. “By changing the chords and production that surround it, you can give it new meaning, which is exactly what we aim to do when working on a cover. We want you to feel something new when listening to a song you’ve heard a million times and hopefully pay attention to the lyrics more than you normally would.”
To that point, the best look for Capital Cities’ cover of “Stayin’ Alive” is not a polyester pantsuit with a gold chain but a polo shirt and some Wayfarers. Merchant and Simonian have the fever for a different kind of Saturday night soundtrack, the Harold Faltermeyer variety.
Now about Capital Cities’ new music video. It’s actually the third clip supporting “Safe And Sound,” a higher-budget expansion of the duo’s original video treatment, which dates back to 2011. A second video for the song arrived in January 2012, coinciding with a remix EP. (A new “Safe And Sound” Remix EP, featuring contributions by RAC, DJ Politik, and others, was released last month.)
Throwing a spotlight on dance styles through the ages, Merchant and Simonian prove they’re not completely allergic to polyester, donning the required attire for a disco moment in “Safe And Sound.”
