Here comes the ‘Vain’ again

In March, I featured the UK’s “Master of the Mash-Ups,” Mark Vidler (“Spin doctor”). After swearing off the bastard-pop genre for a bit, Vidler had returned, re-energized and at the top of his game.

On Thursday, he posted the latest Go Home Productions compilation, Spliced Krispies. According to Vidler, it’s a “flight back to the old-school days and a future soundtrack for summer 2008.” Putting this one together was the most fun he’d had in ages, he admits: “No limitations or pander to artists’ or record labels’ desires, just went into screwing around with some favorite songs and seeing what turned up.”

One highlight of the 11-track Spliced Krispies is “Mick ‘n’ Carly,” which splices Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” with The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You.” Mick Jagger sang back-up on Simon’s 1973 classic, which has been the subject of much scuttlebutt since its release in 1973. The singer has remained mostly mum about her song’s target male, only divulging to the public that there’s an “E,” “A,” and a “R” in his name.

It’s a riddle that’s lasted over 35 years, and now Vidler’s twisted take may get the guessing game going all over again. Check out the accompanying video, masterfully crafted from some performance clips:

Be sure to visit the Go Home Productions site to pick up Spliced Krispies soon. These mash-ups have a way of raising the ire of the original artists, though they make such a pretty pair.
