Turn It Up

Have Mercy!

Rockferry, the debut disc from Duffy, arrived on American shores on Tuesday. Back in March, I waxed enthusiastically about the Welsh-born soulster (“Duffy In Memphis”), and still think she’s got the goods to win over skeptical musicheads here.

Lead single “Mercy” is making inroads on radio, just in time for summer. So expertly mixed, I bet the song would sound just as good coming out of an old transistor radio as it would through the best car-stereo speakers. (Unfortunately, I don’t have an old transistor to test this hypothesis. Or great car-stereo speakers.)

Need one more reason to pick up Rockferry? Hitch a ride with Duffy down “Warwick Avenue.” Fair warning: The accompanying video is a little too close for comfort, with shades of Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”:

Purchase Duffy – Rockferry via Amazon, iTunes (which is offering two exclusive U.S. bonus tracks, “Save It For Your Prayers” and “Oh Boy.” Sometimes being late to the party has its rewards.)
