It’s been done so many times by now that Brooklyn Bands Cover Your ’80s Faves could serve as the title to a K-Tel compilation. But while the concept may not be original, I’m always curious to hear what bands from the borough pick out from the past.
Savoir Adore has found the idea so nice that they’ve done it twice. Earlier this year, Paul Hammer and Deidre Muro recorded Men Without Hats’ “Pop Goes The World,” soundtracking a Tide commercial. An agency pitch to the duo no doubt served as the impetus there, but I imagine that Savoir Adore’s newest cover, tackling Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now,” was likely their desire alone.
A B-side on Savoir Adore’s Dreamers EP, released last month, it’s not a drastic reworking of Thompson Twins’ original, but I respect Hammer and Muro’s reverential approach. After all, “Hold Me Now” was the British trio’s biggest U.S. hit, peaking at #3 in May 1984, so best not to mess with perfection. Hit play, and let loving start all over again.
Now signed to Nettwerk Records, Savoir Adore’s Our Nature, originally out last fall, is being re-released on Tuesday with a new tune, “Beating Hearts.”
Purchase Savoir Adore – “Hold Me Now” (Thompson Twins cover) via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
Side note: When Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now” was on the radio all those years ago, I always heard the lyric “So I’ll sing you a new song” as a reference to Howard Jones’ “New Song,” which was climbing the charts at the very same time.
