While the The Cure’s 13th studio album isn’t out until fall, fans don’t have to wait quite that long for a dose of something new. On the 13th of every month ’til their double-disc is due, the band is releasing a new single. May’s entry, “The Only One” is the first of four.

I’ve followed The Cure since high school, when my friend Amy lent me her cassette of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. From that point forward, every time my friends and I were in charge of DJing dances, the uptempo “Just Like Heaven” and “Why Can’t I Be You?” were staples of the playlist we made.

As a teenager, I certainly found reason to wallow in the depths of despair, so Robert Smith & Co.’s darker tunes perfectly matched such moods (like all of 1989’s Disintegration, the follow-up to Kiss Me x3). But there’s something to be said for pulling back the curtains, letting the light in and letting go of whatever has got you down. When Wish came out three years later, the band had again struck a nice balance between the two extremes.

“Friday I’m In Love,” the second single from Wish, is musical Prozac. No matter what day of the week, when those first few notes ring out, clouds part and smiles form. Reaching just #18 on the Billboard Hot 100, Smith’s ode to his special someone did take home top honors on the Modern Rock chart.

The Cure’s name was even misspelled on the bass drum in the song’s music video, but that wasn’t enough to derail this “Love” train:

Though not as determinedly blissful as “Friday I’m In Love,” new song “The Only One” shows The Cure still knows how to throw out frowns every once in a while.
