Sigur, we’re gonna download

Icelandic atmospheric-rock group Sigur Rós returns on June 24 with a new disc. With A Buzz In Our Ears, We Play Endlessly (translated from the native-tongue Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust) was produced by Flood (U2, Nine Inch Nails, The Killers).

My first encounter with Sigur Rós was thanks to the Showtime series Queer As Folk. Their haunting Njósnavélin (The Nothing Song)” played over the closing credits to an episode in Season 3. As a result of hearing that one track (aka “Untitled 4”), I’ve picked up each of the band’s studio releases since.

Sigur Rós‘ sound is almost indescribable (at times, hopeless; at others, hopeful; often disturbing; sometimes soothing). The lyrics are unintelligible, so any meaning gleaned is subjective interpretation (read up on the band’s made-up language, Volenska). Still, the sum of these parts is powerfully moving. That’s the magic of Sigur Rós.

In anticipation of With A Buzz, Sigur Rós is offering a free download of the album’s first track, “Gobbledigook.” Just give up your e-mail address and the song is yours (in glorious 320 kbps, too). The tribal drums on this one are simply fantastic, though I’m getting a somewhat inexplicable Simon-and-Garfunkel vibe from the track (not a bad thing, but I can’t quite explain it).

Look for the “Gobbledigook” video on the same download page, but fair warning: Like the album’s cover art above, the clip plays out like an Urban Outfitters catalog without a shred of clothing (hence, it’s NSFW).
