A master of many instruments, Johnny Stimson can adopt any musical style he wishes. So far in his short career, the Dallas singer-songwriter has done exactly that, switching from earnest Jon McLaughlin-like piano pop to breezy Jason Mraz-ish acoustic jams to Mumford & Sons-style folk rock. And that’s just the M’s.
Even with his chameleonic predilection established, Stimson’s new single, “Human Man,” still signals a tectonic shift in direction. Electropop is now his chosen sound du jour, and the breezy, disco-splashed “Human Man” slides easily in alongside spins of Passion Pit, Penguin Prison, and Daft Punk (unmistakable shades of the unmasked duo‘s “Digital Love” or really, George Duke).
“This new direction has been a long time in the making and I’m excited to get it out of the studio and into human ears,” Stimson explains. “Disco started spinning in my head and I think it’s going to hang for a while.”
Stimson’s switch-up arrives at exactly the right time, not only because the mainstream seems to be embracing the disco vibe (again) but also that “Human Man”‘s sinewy groove is summer through and through.
There’s a music video for “Human Man” if your human eyeballs desire some Run Lola Run-style entertainment.
