It seems ages ago that the original Sugababes lineup of Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhan Donaghy reunited to form a new trio. In reality, less than a year has passed since the ladies’ official announcement.
Along the way, there have been coy interviews, tweets about studio sessions, a Kendrick Lamar reimagining, and even a song snippet or two. Today that nearly 365-day wait for new music is finally over, as Mutya Keisha Siobhan have debuted their new single, “Flatline,” in full.
Written by the trio, “Flatline” was produced by Dev Hynes (Solange, Sky Ferreira), who brings a bit of Prince to the proceedings (the slightest snap of a Linn snare) and a measure of Tango In The Night-era Fleetwood Mac — references that continue to bubble up in certain circles. “Flatline” has an intimate, subtle sound that still manages to be insidiously catchy, with Mutya Keisha Siobhan’s harmonies forming its gorgeous center.
With ‘oh-oh-oh’ background vocals by Spector’s Fred MacPherson also indicative of the restraint at play, kudos to Mutya Keisha Siobhan for opting to take an alternate route back to pop. “Flatline” shows their much anticipated resuscitation was absolutely worth the wait.
Mutya Keisha Siobhan – “Flatline” is out September 1.
