This week’s cover song received a UK release in early 2007, though it took nearly a year to make an official Stateside appearance: Dame Shirley Bassey taking on Pink‘s “Get The Party Started.”
Bassey, of course, is the big-voiced siren forever linked with the James Bond films, and rightly so, having handled three of the series’ themes (“Goldfinger,” “Diamonds Are Forever,” and “Moonraker”). The same aural aesthetic found in those and other classic Bond themes (dramatic opening, swirling strings) has been applied to her rendition of Pink’s #4 pop hit, and it’s a killer.
Bassey has always been a vocalist who completely commits to her performance (a rare and rarer breed these days), and the results confirm the now 71-year-old singer remains a show-stopping musical force of nature. Hear here:
Get The Party Started is Bassey’s first album in ten years. In addition to the title track, the set includes other covers (like Lionel Richie’s “Hello”), plus a standout new track, “The Living Tree.” Released as a single, the song propelled Bassey into the record books as the artist with the longest span of Top 40 hits in the UK (1957-2007).
As for Pink, Billboard reports that her fifth disc is on tap for October, with first single “So What” set to debut next month. If Pink tours behind the disc, I’m in. She had the opening slot on Justin Timberlake’s “FutureSexLoveShow” last year, and wowed the crowd with a fearless performance that was a-ma-zing.
