Oh my Josh

On Saturday night, I finally watched Thursday’s So You Think You Can Dance finale. An NFL preseason game delayed the original broadcast here in Chicago, so SYTYCD didn’t get underway until 11:00 pm that night. And with a two-hour show ahead, I wasn’t staying up ’til 1:00 am to watch sans TiVo speediness.

I have to say that there were indeed some outstanding moments this season, based on the routines the judges selected for repeat performances. But overall, this season was something of a snore.

These second turns in the spotlight did make it all the more shocking when Katee became the second dancer ousted (after Courtney). From Bollywood and Contemporary (“Mercy”) to the Pas De Deux (“Imagine”) and Hip-Hop (“No Air”), I was reminded of just how versatile Katee proved throughout the competition. So with Joshua and Twitch the last men standing, I wasn’t sure how it was going to end.

And thanks to TiVo, I still didn’t. My recording ended before SYTYCD did. (Bad TiVo! First American Idol, now this.)

So I had to turn to the Interwebs to learn that Joshua topped Twitch. (Tell us how it feels to be beaten by a “pansy,” Twitch?) I’m still puzzled by something though. The judges, in heaping recent praise upon Joshua, pointed out that he had no formal dance training, yet his SYTYCD online bio explicitly states otherwise (and I recall some background piece in which he spoke of taking whatever classes he could).

That aside, one big mystery remains: Last season’s winner, Sabra, was conspicuously absent from the finale’s SYTYCD alumni dance-off. But my other Season 3 favorite, Neil, did appear, and I might just trek to NYC to catch Altar Boyz while he’s still in it.
