Thomas Azier – “Ghostcity”

“Ghostcity,” the first single from Thomas Azier‘s debut album due next year, is one of the more danceable songs in his electropop oeuvre.

But as demonstrated on Azier’s two EPs from last year, Hylas 001 and Hylas 002 — both now re-released via Casablanca Records, which wisely snapped up the nascent multi-instrumentalist — the Dutch native is still drawing inspiration from the darker environs of his adopted home, Berlin. “Ghostcity” was recorded in an abandoned Soviet-era factory.

But while the lyrics share a desire to flee from the shadows of the city, “Ghostcity” has a beat that’s all casual strut. Azier continues to impress with his vocal range, exploring different tonal avenues in “Ghostcity,” from the clipped-pace pre-chorus to his arching cry that follows behind.
