Until a couple of weeks ago, there were just two Drake songs I liked, both involving Rihanna. But then the former Degrassi: Next Generation star released “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” an unexpected detour into light, Phil Collins-ish synthpop. Drake raps not one single solitary word on the track, instead singing the entire thing. It’s beautiful, really.
Drake’s new single caught the ear of Blood Orange (aka producer Dev Hynes), who recorded a cover of “Hold On, We’re Going Home” while working late in the studio last week. Turning up the tempo a notch, Hynes decorates his rendition with some very Prince-ly touches, including an “If I Was Your Girlfriend” flourish and an insanely ace guitar solo to finish things out.
Blood Orange’s cover might best be called “Hold On, We’re Going To Paisley Park.”
