After scuttling her sophomore album, Lollipops & Politics, last year prior to its release and leaving Island Records, VV Brown decamped with Dave Okumu (Jessie Ware) to record a completely new set. The fruits of those labors, Samson & Delilah, will be delivered on October 8 (September 9 in the UK) via her own YOY Records.
Based on the reaction to the set’s first single, “Samson,” I was in the minority of those who enjoyed VV Brown’s new direction. Venturing far from the pop territory of “Shark In The Water,” I found the tough, haunting “Samson” completely enthralling, even if the song’s visual accompaniment was a hairy mess.
Following up “Samson,” VV Brown has released the album’s second single, “The Apple,” bringing more back on board with a bumping electro track that has Brown adopting an assertive Grace Jones-like delivery. The song, which she allows is the most commercial pop song on Samson & Delilah, was produced by Pascal Gabriel (Marina and The Diamonds, Goldfrapp, Ladyhawke).
VV Brown has released a music video for “The Apple” too, but like “Samson,” it doesn’t do the song any favors.
If that left a bad taste in your mouth, let’s get back to the core of what makes Brown’s “The Apple” so delicious, the track itself. She’s recorded a French version, translating her lyrics with the help of Gabriel. Pomme de Brown, as it were.
Purchase VV Brown – “The Apple” (only the English version is available, unfortunately) via iTunes.
