Starting off with jam-packed, high-concept music videos for “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” “Nasty,” and “When I Think Of You,” the treatment for Janet Jackson‘s sixth and final single from her 1986 album, Control, “The Pleasure Principle,” pared things way down: Just the 21-year-old singer practicing her choreography in a warehouse loft. Some mirrors and a chair are Janet’s only company.
Zendaya‘s music video for her fantastic debut single, “Replay,” takes inspiration from Janet’s iconic clip, at least at its start, focusing on the young Disney Channel star going through some steps in not dissimilar setting. The occasional appearance of her not-quite-there male partner is a fresh addition (one that plays well with the song’s theme), but the arrival of some very real backup dancers midway through the video is wholly unnecessary. The camera loves Zendaya, who can more than hold her own on the floor, as her second-place Dancing With The Stars run proved.
It was true with “The Pleasure Principle” over 25 years ago, and less can still be so much more.
