Adding Fuel To Robyn’s Fire

Despite Robyn landing two consecutive top 10 singles from her debut album, 1997’s Robyn Is Here, her sophomore album, 1999’s My Truth, never received a U.S. release. That disappearing act continued for 2002’s Don’t Stop The Music, only issued in her native Sweden and Japan and bearing a title I doubt Robyn intended to be read ironically.

That unceremonious silence meant only the most rabid of Robyn fans were aware of assertive pop/R&B gems like “Keep This Fire Burning,” the lead single from Don’t Stop The Music. In 2004, English soul singer Beverly Knight recorded the song with Robyn’s original producers for her fourth album, Affirmation, a cover that reached #16 on the UK singles chart.

Now Knight’s vocals have been sampled by London DJ/production duo Tough Love for their new single on Nurvous Records, “Keep It Burning.” Not only am I thoroughly enjoying their deep house treatment, Alex and Stef have rekindled my interest in both Knight and Robyn’s original recordings.

Robyn’s “Keep This Fire Burning” was previously covered (in full) for the clubs back in 2008, a release credited to Outsiders featuring Amanda Wilson. Freemasons, with whom Wilson had previously collaborated, produced a fantastic remix worth checking out.
