Though Dev Hynes has been earning ink for his behind-the-scenes work with Solange, Sky Ferreira, and most recently, the reunited original Sugababes, Mutya Keisha Siobhan, the talented producer is also a solo artist who records as Blood Orange.
Blood Orange’s new single, “Chamakay,” represents the first public preview of a new album, Cupid Deluxe, aside from a few car listening parties he conducted in New York City. But as “Chamakay” shows, Hynes isn’t going it entirely alone on the follow-up to 2011’s Coastal Grooves. Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek assists on the gentle trop-pop track, continuing the collaborative spirit of his other projects.
“Chamakay” premiered last night via a music video and filmed in Georgetown, Guyana, the birthplace of Hynes’ mother. In the clip, directed by Kindness‘ Adam Bainbridge, Hynes meets his 92-year-old grandfather for the first time.
