Dems cover CoCo Star

London-via-Edinburgh trio Dems have covered CoCo Star’s 1996 dance single, “I Need A Miracle.”

If that song doesn’t ring the least bit familiar, you no doubt have heard “Toca’s Miracle,” credited to Fragma. The massive 2000 club smash was a mashup of the German group’s own “Toca Me” instrumental and Star’s “I Need A Miracle,” written for the British singer by her friends Rob Davis and Victor Imbres.

But as has too often been the case in dance music, the players involved didn’t receive proper credit or royalties. Thirteen years since “Toca’s Miracle” was released, Star and the various record labels involved are still sorting through the legal mess.

While a fascinating if frustrating backstory, such drama shouldn’t detract from Dems’ gorgeous take on “Toca’s Miracle” (aka “I Need A Miracle”). Relocating the track from a laser-filled dance floor to a starlit open space, David Gardener, Duncan Mann, and Dan Moss’ ethereal cover is absolutely mesmerizing.
