“Just Dance” by Lady GaGa has been hanging out in my speakers since early summer, and like the artist herself, the insanely catchy track is proving to have some legs.
By the end of June, “Just Dance” was already a #2 Billboard dance hit. A month later, Lady GaGa appeared on the penultimate episode of So You Think You Can Dance, wielding her signature ‘disco stick’ in a visual onslaught that surely left some utterly baffled. Others must have been converted to Lady GaGa’s electro-pop, as digital sales of “Just Dance” skyrocketed.
Fast forward to the present, where the track is climbing the Hot 100, clocking in at #67 this week. The longevity of “Just Dance” has been helpful to my cause here, as it’s taken me this long to throw the spotlight on Lady GaGa. Hear here:
If you’ve seen or read any interviews with Lady GaGa, it’s clear she’s not suffering from a lack of confidence. Reminiscent of another female pop star who’s made no apologies about her ambitions, LOGO’s NewNowNext asked Gaga whether she feels she’s Madonna 2.0:
“I never really thought of myself as the new Madonna or anything, and then people around me just started to say it. I mean, look at me, we have a lot in common: the Lower East Side thing; I’m Italian; I was a brunette and I went blonde … I’m very exhibitionistic. So we do have a lot in common, but I also think I bring something new.
But I appreciate the comparison, because I do think she’s probably one of the most powerful female performers in a long time.”
Speaking of her linkage to other female pop stars, Lady GaGa submitted two songs for inclusion on Britney Spears’ upcoming Circus. Her own debut, The Fame, is set for an October 28 release. But if you desire more than “Just Dance” right now, two other preview singles, “Poker Face” and “Beautiful Dirty Rich,” are available now.
