With just a week to go ’til Election Day, I felt it worth sharing this fun flashback from 1992 (even if it isn’t quite Friday).
That year’s Bush vs. Clinton presidential contest marked the first time MTV participated in the process. The channel’s “Choose Or Lose” campaign coverage brought a generation of young Americans closer to the candidates than ever before, though I mostly pined for proximity to the lovely, talented Tabitha Soren of MTV News. I even penned a congratulatory letter to Ms. Soren, offering my kudos on her efforts; somewhere in my personal file of pop-culture ephemera is an autographed photo sent in reply.
MTV’s complementary “Rock The Vote” effort encouraged those 18-24 year olds to register to vote and, yes, rock said vote. Actors, comedians, and artists contributed PSAs, and groovy dance trio Deee-lite joined the political party with “Vote Baby Vote.” Unconventional, sure. Campy, perhaps. Catchy? You betcha!
I can only guess as to which candidate Lady Miss Kier is supporting in 2008, though I think it’s safe to assume her platform has remained unchanged all these years: Heels. Chunky, day-glo heels.
And while it’s a different time (nearly 16 years have passed since Clinton was elected), the stakes are even higher this time around. So let’s heed LMK’s call to rock the vote once more!
