Tori Amos is perhaps just as well known for the countless covers she’s performed over the years as she is for her original songs. On record and in concert, tunes from artists like Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, and Joni Mitchell have been taken through the unique prism of the piano-centric songstress.
While touring in support of her 2005 album, The Beekeeper, Amos asked fans to submit cover song suggestions. When several of these dates were subsequently issued as “official bootlegs,” those of us not present were able to enjoy Amos’ live interpretations of such inspired submissions as Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart,” Madonna’s “Live To Tell,” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer.”
Cyndi Lauper’s “All Through The Night” was another, recorded on a stop at L.A.’s Royce Hall Auditorium. As the original is firmly ensconced as one of my all-time favorite singles, I was happy to hear Amos give it a go (her lyrical fumble makes it more endearing). Hear here:
This week back in 1984, Lauper was climbing the Billboard Hot 100 with “All Through The Night,” the fourth single taken from her debut, She’s So Unusual. The song, which would reach #5, was itself a cover. Written by Jules Shear, the singer-songwriter included it on his 1983 debut, Watch Dog. In addition to “All Through The Night,” She’s So Unusual also featured covers of Prince’s “When You Were Mine” and The Brains’ “Money Changes Everything.”
