Lady Sovereign‘s 2006 single, “Love Me Or Hate Me,” got major exposure in a campaign for Verizon Wireless, and her video was the first by a Brit to hit #1 on MTV’s (now departed) Total Request Live. But after selling 427,000 digital downloads of the song (there was also a killer remix featuring Missy Elliott), Lady Sovereign’s relationship with label Def Jam appears to have ended.
Billboard reports that the English rapper’s sophomore set, Jigsaw, is scheduled for an April 2009 release on her own label, Midget Records. Distribution will be handled by EMI. Of the forthcoming disc, Lady Sovereign says, “The album is the next chapter. It’s a massive leap forward.”
Based on preview single, “I Got You Dancing,” that leap includes flirting with electro and Auto-Tune (à la Kanye West). Lady Sovereign sounds like she’s having a blast, and the song has got the goods to, yep, get you dancing. Now she’s invited the whole world to join her on the floor, offering a free download of “I Got You Dancing.” I defy you to sit still.
