If, like me, you haven’t yet seen Stephen Colbert’s special, A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All, and (like me again) you’re not ready to spring for the DVD, gather ’round the TV set on Christmas morning, kids. Comedy Central is set to air Colbert’s holiday offering on Thursday at 10/9 Central.
Really, which would you rather wake up to: Regis and Kelly lamely prattling on about the Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade—featuring musical guests Miley Cyrus, Josh Groban, and The Jonas Brothers!—or Stephen Colbert, serving up some genuine merriment with help from Elvis Costello, John Legend, Feist, Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, and Jon Stewart?
“Another Christmas Song,” the special’s swinging opener, is the final free holiday Single of the Week on iTunes. Like all of the originals on soundtrack to A Colbert Christmas (an iTunes exclusive), “Another Christmas Song” was written by Daily Show producer David Javerbaum and Fountains of Wayne‘s Adam Schlesinger. With lyrics like “My register’s ching-ching chinging / From the cash I’m bringing / From another Christmas song,” the irony of the track being offered gratis lines up with Colbert’s comedic bent quite nicely.
While “Another Christmas Song” is a gift to you, a portion of the soundtrack and DVD sales of A Colbert Christmas benefit Feeding America (formerly known as Second Harvest). So if you decide to add either to your collection, consider the charity tie-in a pretty sweet Christmas bonus.
