O Christmas Free: George Michael, Carly Simon, Blitzen Trapper

December 25, 2008 0 Comments

Merry Christmas, everyone! If you’ve been following the links in these O Christmas Free posts, your holiday playlist should be packed with over 50 tracks. And just in time for your Christmas Day celebration, here are three more MP3s worth adding to the final mix.

As he promised (and tipped right here), George Michael has delivered a gift to fans this morning. “December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas)” is the singer’s first yuletide tune since 1984’s “Last Christmas.”

“December Song” also revisits Christmas Past, but is decidedly more downbeat in melody. Remembering troubled times at home as a kid, Michael reflects on the renewed optimism the season always brought him:

There was always Christmas time
Jesus came to stay
I could believe in peace on Earth
And I could watch TV all day

And so I dreamed of Christmas

“December Song” is bookended by a snippet from Frank Sinatra’s 1957 recording of “A Christmas Waltz,” with Michael joining Sinatra’s singers on the close.

The friendship between Carly Simon and Swiss electric-harpist Andreas Vollenweider reportedly extends back to the start of their careers. Vollenweider also is godfather to one of Simon’s children. The two musicians have collaborated several times, including four tracks on Vollenweider’s holiday album, 2006’s Midnight Clear.

New Age music has never been my bag (and by extension, Vollenweider’s body of work), but a harp has that “Christmas sound” and Simon’s voice is one I’ll never tire of hearing. With Vollenweider’s expert plucking, the two turn in a beautiful take on “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear.” Jesus, I bet you think this song is about you.

Blitzen Trapper‘s album Furr was designated as #13 in Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2008 (the title song landed at #4 in the magazine’s singles tally). Though Furr is the band’s fourth release, until their song “Christmas Is Coming Soon” appeared on my O Christmas Free radar, I’d never heard of the Portland, Oregon sextet.

“Christmas Is Coming Soon” appears on I’ll Stay ‘Til After Christmas, the indie-artist holiday collection benefitting Amnesty Interntational. Though I noted the album cover’s apostrophic abuse, I nearly missed highlighting the Blitzen Trapper track here. A last-minute survey of additions to my MP3 library this morning corrected what would have been an unfortunate oversight.

“Christmas Is Coming Soon” is something of a stream-of-consciousness string, and I don’t know what “countless blanks fired at will,” “making love in a stolen car,” Steve McQueen, and Donkey Kong have to do with Christmas. Maybe that’s just how the BT fellas celebrate in the Pacific Northwest. Still, their acoustic tune is a nice soundtrack for these snowed-in days.
