Nearly seven years after a car crash in Honduras claimed her life at 30, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes returns on January 27 with Eye Legacy, a new posthumous release that mixes previously unreleased tracks and new versions of songs from Lopes’ 2001 import-only solo debut, Supernova.
The project’s first single, “Let’s Just Do It,” was released today, featuring Lopes’ TLC cohorts, T-Boz and Chili, plus a rap from Missy Elliott. In fact, sans T-Boz and Elliott, the song was first recorded (and later shelved) during sessions for TLC’s 1999 album Fanmail. Updated with a new rhythm track and vocal contributions, the mid-tempo number is subtly catchy, thanks in part to its simple, repetitive chorus (“Let’s just do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, yeah”). It’s good to hear Lopes again, but Elliott steals the show. The rapper/singer/songwriter’s oft-delayed Block Party album is finally on track for February, but Elliott has been plenty busy in the meantime, writing for other artists and making guest appearances on discs from Danity Kane, The Pussycat Dolls, and DJ Khaled.
