U2’s ‘Boots’ Made For Rocking

Pumped for some new U2? Following on the heels of their performance at Barack Obama’s pre-inaugural “We Are One” concert in Washington, D.C., the Dublin do-gooders have released “Get On Your Boots,” the first single from No Line On The Horizon, out March 3.

Not quite the anthemic call to arms (or feet) its title might indicate, “Get On Your Boots” instead calls to mind Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up” and The Escape Club’s “Wild Wild West.” This being U2 and all, put aside the cognitive dissonance of such polar-opposite lineage for a moment, as deeper meaning lurks beneath these lifted melodies. An examination of the song’s lyrics reveals “Get On Your Boots” to be a next-gen “Make Love Not War,” with Bono exhorting you to sport some ‘sexy,’ ‘foxy’ boots and forget the fighting.

What world troubles? What economic collapse? Let’s get our Zappos on and go shopping! Seriously though, while “Get On Your Boots” is good, it does sound a bit like U2 browsing the racks at the rock ‘n’ roll mall. I guess that beats recycling their own riffs (the musical equivalent of shopping your closet), but am I alone in thinking the menacing guitar is reminiscent of Stone Temple Pilots’ “Sex Type Thing”? Ye gads. Maybe ‘Boots’ is shorthand for bootlegs.

Listen to “Get On Your Boots,” now streaming on U2’s site. And if you think the single’s a good fit, download now via iTunes.
