One of my current TV obsessions is Whatever, Martha!, which airs on the Fine Living Network.
Imagine Mystery Science Theater 3000, but instead of totally lame B-movies, old episodes of Martha Stewart Living are up on the screen. Playing the wisecracking role of Joel, Tom, and Crow—or Mike, Tom, and Crow in later MST3K years—are Stewart’s daughter, Alexis, and her friend, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt.
The two gal-pals have hosted a Sirius radio show on the Martha Stewart channel since 2005, but watching Alexis and Jennifer rip into segments about corn jewelry and felt hats, one wonders how the Doyenne of Domesticity could possibly have approved. Well, as she explains in the intro, Martha came up with the concept for of Whatever, Martha! herself.
Turns out the resemblance to MST3K is intentional. Martha is an insomniac fan, revealing a long hidden wicked sense of humor (clearly shared by her daughter). Martha also serves as the show’s executive producer, wisely retaining control of final edit (mean-funny is fine, but not too mean).
Here, Alexis and Jennifer skewer a segment about s’mores, as Martha turns a campfire tradition into a typically complex arts-and-crafts project:
Even better are the segments in which Martha is joined by guests. No one can tell what someone’s really thinking better than that person’s child, and Alexis zeroes in on her mother’s expressions and tics to share what we’d all missed while viewing such how-to pairings.
So after years of hearing how great Martha is at this or how wonderful Martha did that, Whatever, Martha! must serve as a sort of televised talk-therapy session for Alexis (and by extension, all of us). Joined by Jennifer, the two offer a hilarious retort to our assumed home and garden shortcomings. Let it all out, ladies!
New episodes of Whatever, Martha! air Tuesday nights at 9:00/8:00 Central on the Fine Living Network, but you can track down the show at other times on the cable net’s schedule, too.
