One week after the Steelers vs. Cardinals match-up in Super Bowl XLIII, I’m gearing up for the musical equivalent. The 51st Annual Grammy Awards airs tonight on CBS, and in one major category, it’s a Battle of the Brits.
Nominated for Record of the Year are Coldplay (“Viva La Vida”), Leona Lewis (“Bleeding Love”), M.I.A. (“Paper Planes”), Robert Plant & Allison Krauss (“Please Read The Letter”), and Adele (“Chasing Pavements”).
With the exception of Plant/Krauss (sorry, but I don’t dig their rootsy collaboration), I’ll be happy to see any of these nominees win. Coldplay has enjoyed such mainstream success this year, so I think it’s their prize to lose, but I would really love to see Adele called up to the stage at the Staples Center.
I’ve been a big cheerleader for this particular Londoner, and “Chasing Pavements” is a brilliant record. The at-a-crossroads theme is relatable, the ache in Adele’s performance palpable, and the production surrounding her inner dialogue wonderfully balanced. “Chasing Pavements,” which Adele co-wrote with producer Eg White, is also up for Song of the Year, and their instant classic deserves to win there, too.
Adele has two other shots at getting some Grammy love tonight. “Chasing Pavements” is a contender in the crowded Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (Duffy, Leona Lewis, Sara Bareilles, Katy Perry, and Pink have tracks in the category). And she’s up for Best New Artist, alongside Duffy, Jonas Brothers, Lady Antebellum (who?), and Jazmine Sullivan (who? again).
You won’t find Santogold among those names, but she should be. “L.E.S. Artistes” was one of my top tunes of 2008, and her eponymous debut, an inventive mix of dub, electronic, and indie rock, placed high on many critics’ year-end lists.
Last year, the American singer-songwriter took on the Brit-to-beat, covering Adele’s “Hometown Glory” for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. In Santogold’s hands, the track becomes something much more visceral, more primal. Hear here:
Get your scorecard to follow all the Grammy action tonight at 8/7 Central on CBS, and tune in an hour earlier for Steve Kroft’s interview with Coldplay on 60 Minutes (here’s a preview). Of course, if you’re really a music geek like me, this year the Pre-Telecast Awards are being streamed online, starting at 4/3 Central, featuring the many categories not presented live tonight.
Santogold’s cover of “Hometown Glory” can be found on Radio 1’s Live Lounge – Vol. 3, available as an import from Amazon.
