The ‘Spirit’ finally moves me

I’d dismissed The Duke Spirit to date because what I’d heard from the British rock outfit was a little too rough and tumble for my tastes. But I’m reconsidering my position after catching the new-ish video for “My Sunken Treasure,” taken from their 2008 album, Neptune.

With a piano pop sound that echoes 1960s girl groups, the swinging “My Sunken Treasure” is sing-along ready. It may very well be the exception to how The Duke Spirit usually rocks, but all I can say is, “More, please”:

Lead singer Liela Moss looks like one tough cookie, but she says she kept bursting into tears while recording the song. I think I’m in love, though I’m not the only one taken with the blonde-tressed frontwoman. Designer Alexander McQueen selected Moss as muse for his McQ collection at Target. There, you’ll also find a tie-in CD from The Duke Spirit featuring songs from their two albums (including “My Sunken Treasure), plus new-to-the-U.S. tunes and a bonus cover of Alex Chilton’s “Baby Doll.” I claimed the last copy at the Target store I visited on Sunday, so it seems I caught the Spirit just in time (the limited release is also sold online).

The Duke Spirit is the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live this Thursday. Tune in and see whether you’re moved, too.
