Friday Flashback

Nobody knows yet

Madonna is planning to issue a greatest hits collection this fall, closing the book on her longtime relationship with Warner Bros. Records. (The former Ms. Ritchie, you’ll recall, signed a lucrative 360-degree deal with Live Nation in October 2007.)

Following 1990’s The Immaculate Collection and 2001’s GHV2, the September release will be Madonna’s third proper best-of (not counting the 1995 ballads-only release, Something To Remember). Her manager, Guy Oseary, has been querying fans via Twitter as to which songs should be included, though these 12 post-Music singles must be strong contenders:

“Die Another Day”
“American Life”
“Hollywood”
“Love Profusion”
“Nothing Fails”
“Hung Up”
“Sorry”
“Jump”
“Get Together”
“4 Minutes”
“Give It 2 Me”
“Miles Away”

Madonna’s meet-ups with Britney Spears and Missy Elliot (“Me Against The Music” and “Into The Hollywood Groove”) might also make the cut. And mixes for “Nobody Knows Me,” the B-side to “Nothing Fails,” did reach #4 on the Billboard Dance/Club chart, so I think a case could be made for its inclusion. While the song didn’t do much for me on American Life, the track was a huge highlight of her 2004 Re-Invention Tour, with credit for the change going to the striking conveyor-belt choreography.

Though this Friday Flashback is of the more recent-years variety, it’s a pleasure to watch Lady M, Entertainer & Mistress of the Moving Runway, at work:

Of course, Madonna fans that have been following along already have nearly everything released, which is why she’ll be heading into the studio to record two additional songs for the set. See, nobody knows better than she that her built-in base is eternally willing to pony up for something previously unheard, whilst knowing any new tunes from the pop queen are unlikely to reach royal status.
