Friday Flashback

‘Days’ and confused

April 24, 2009 0 Comments

Wang Chung‘s “Dance Hall Days” was in my head this morning when I woke up, coming out of a dream where I came upon the single (in a picture sleeve, natch) while searching through a pile of 45s strewn on a bottom shelf in the only remaining aisle on the second floor of a two-story Walgreens that appeared to be going out of business. Most of the records in the stack forgettable/unfamiliar R&B tunes, but for some reason Wang Chung was mixed in among them (the 45 was chipped, but since I didn’t own the sleeve, so I figured I’d buy it. OMD’s “If You Leave” was also there, but that one was all scratched up and sans sleeve).

Yeah, it doesn’t make much more sense when I type it out here. But figuring it made good fodder for today’s Friday Flashback, I did a little research and it turns out that “Dance Hall Days” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 this week in 1984—April 21, to be exact. Whoa.

Though I had a memory of the song doing much better, Wang Chung peaked at #16 with the “Dance Hall Days” that July:

This summer, a reunited Wang Chung will tour the U.S., joining fellow ’80s cohorts ABC, Berlin, Cutting Crew and Heaven 17 for the 2009 edition of the Regeneration Tour.
