Merry Kris-mas to me

Watching my favorite reality television shows recently has left me shaking my head in disbelief.

First, Lil’ Kim was kicked off of Dancing With The Stars last week, her bionic booty perhaps a lil’ too much for the at-home audience. On American Idol, Alison Iraheta, the talented-beyond-her-years teenage rocker, was sent packing after a blistering, bluesy take on Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby.” (My 200+ votes were apparently not enough to save her.) Then The Amazing Race wrapped up its 14th season with the mother-son team of Margie and Luke finishing a disappointing third, after enjoying an early lead in the memory challenge. (Were you as moved as I was by Luke’s touching expression of gratitude to his mom? I’ve watched it back three times since, and waterworks, folks. Every. Single. Time.)

But while my favorites didn’t taste victory, all was right again last night, as the universe decided to make it up to me: Danny “Scream On” Gokey’s time on American Idol officially ended, setting up next week’s showdown between Kris Allen and Adam Lambert. I’d like to think my 100+ calls on Tuesday night for Arkansas’ Most Adorable had a little something to do with Kris’ victory over the Gokester (though Danny shouting his way through Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Dance Little Sister” surely couldn’t have helped).

I’m doubt there’s much he can do to stop the Glambert Momentum, but who would’ve thought that Kris would cover Kanye West’s “Heartless,” accompanied only by his acoustic guitar, and pull the whole thing off? Adam’s has an amazing range, sure, but I don’t get the appeal of his faux emotional theatrics (or maybe I’m still upset that Gary Jules didn’t get proper credit for deconstructing Tears For Fears’ “Mad World” first).

As Simon Cowell said (and perhaps no one else could/would), the Idol finale is gonna be a “big ding-dong.” He’s right. Come Tuesday night, we’re all in for one sweet treat.
