Eclipses the original

By now you’ve probably seen this, as it started making the rounds of the Intertron a few days ago—the “Literal Video Version” of Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit, “Total Eclipse Of The Heart.”

While the world was previously smitten with a similar re-reading of A-ha’s “Take On Me” last year, at least the original video had something resembling a plot. Tyler’s clip, which I had absolutely no recollection of, was directed by Russell Mulcahy and casts the hoarse-throated singer as the headmistress at an all-boys boarding school. But that doesn’t begin to describe the horror-show of visual non sequiturs the viewer must endure, all in the span of five-and-a-half minutes.

The video’s utter incoherence makes it totally ripe for this recent parody. Though it’s hard to choose just one, my favorite literal line reading is the one that sums up this mess best: “The gayest man on earth would call this over the top”:

Video aside, the epic song remains a classic, with Tyler’s pipes selling the hell out of it. Written and produced by Jim Steinman (who reportedly also storyboarded the video), “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” spent four straight weeks at #1 in October 1983.
