Like the sound of MGMT, but wish the musical duo were even more theatrical and perhaps hailed from the land down under? Well, Empire Of The Sun fits the bill nicely on both counts.

Luke Steel and Nick Littlemore named their band after the 1984 novel by J.G. Ballard (which later became a Steven Spielberg film starring a young Christian Bale). Their debut album, Walking On A Dream, was released in their native Australia last fall, with the rest of the world following earlier this year.

The video for the title song (and first single), “Walking On A Dream,” features our costumed heroes traversing the streets of Shanghai, China. Though much gesticulating is involved in the clip’s various scenes, there isn’t much of a plot. But that’s okay, as the viewer can focus instead on the ’80s-inspired soundtrack. While I’ve had the album in my hands since March, I’m still trying to pinpoint the exact references. Perhaps they’ll more quickly come to mind for you:
