How do most folks discover new music videos these days? I guess if you’re in high school or younger (or gulp, unemployed), you might have tons of free time to troll the Interweb and see what’s been posted to YouTube or any number of music sites. I, however, remain thankfully gainfully employed and thus turn to TiVo, instructing it to faithfully record Logo’s NewNowNext music-video show every week.
That’s how I came to watch Kanye West’s “Paranoid” video (albeit later than most), a noir-ish road trip starring Rihanna. The clip is directed by Nabil Elderkin, an Aussie photographer who came to Chicago in 1999 and now works and lives in Los Angeles. Elderkin has been shooting stills of the hip-hop star for nearly five years now, and has previously directed videos for Kanye’s “Champion” and Welcome To Heartbreak.” Currently, the two are collaborating on a coffee-table book from Kanye’s “Glow In The Dark” tour, scheduled for September.
Not only do I love the abstract realism on display in “Paranoid” (and Elderkin’s treatment of the type), watching Rihanna isn’t a bad way to pass three-and-a-half minutes:
“Paranoid” is the fourth single from Kanye’s 808s & Heartbreak, which I haven’t yet picked up (though I plan to). Thing is, this particular mix of “Paranoid” isn’t on the album, so use the link below if you like what you’ve heard here.
