A couple of weeks ago, the Interweb was all in a tangle because Kanye West had supposedly declared himself the new “King Of Pop.” Issuing a vehement denial via his website, West called the accusation “CORNY” (caps his, ’cause that’s how he rolls. Or blogs).

But while West may not actively be campaigning for the crown, it could soon bestowed upon him anyway. On this week’s Billboard Hot 100, the hip-hop star guests on no less than four singles: Keri Hilson’s “Knock You Down” (#4), Kid Cudi’s Lady Gaga-sampling “Make Her Say” (#43), Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” (#66), and Jamie Foxx’s “Digital Girl” (#92). While Hilson was knocked down a notch this week, the other three are migrating north.

Yet another track featuring West, Mr Hudson‘s “Supernova,” is bubbling under the Hot 100. The track is already a UK #2 hit for the Birmingham, England-born Ben Hudson, a singer-songwriter signed to West’s G.O.O.D. Music label (like Kid Cudi). In an MTV interview last year, West was quoted as saying he believes Mr Hudson “has the potential to be bigger than me, to be one of the most important artists of his generation.”

West’s proclivity for making such grand statements, of course, is what gave the (totally false) “King Of Pop” rumor some traction. But Hudson has been working hard in the House of Kanye, pitching in on a few tracks from 808s & Heartbreak, including “Say You Will,” “Amazing,” and “Paranoid,” and will also guest on Jay-Z’s forthcoming disc, so the platinum blonde Brit is well positioned to break big.

Straight No Chaser, Mr Hudson’s forthcoming LP, is out in October, and “Supernova” is its first single, a plea for one more chance from a former flame. Sure, the song could do with a little less Auto-Tune, but besides that minor-ish quibble, the epic-sounding “Supernova” is a good bet to quickly conquer Top 40 territory. And with West’s knack for promotion, I’ve no doubt that Mr Hudson’s star will burn very brightly indeed:
