Sure, Whitney Houston might not been in top voice on Good Morning America this AM (it’s all Oprah’s fault, you see) but she’s only begun to cash in on the public’s stockpiled goodwill as her long-awaited comeback/marketing plan kicks into even higher gear. There’s that upcoming sit-down with Oprah, for starters, plus the singer looks to have a near-lock on a #1 Billboard debut with her new album, I Look To You, and a rumor that she’ll appear on VH1 Divas later this month has yet to be squelched.
Houston started off her four-song mini-set on GMA with lead single, “Million Dollar Bill,” written by Alicia Keys, but it’s the Freemasons Club Mix that really has her sounding like a million bucks. A prominent melodic chunk reminds me of the “You met your match” line from Aretha Franklin’s 1985 hit,”Who’s Zooming Who,” and while I know the UK duo likes to reach back for inspiration (more evidence of their genius here), such a left-field reference might merely be my ’80s-addled brain having a little fun with me. Still, the mix is nothing short of brilliant. [UPDATE: Giving my ears more time to ruminate, I think the melodic reference is Whitney’s own, “How Will I Know.”)
Banking on the Freemasons’ Midas touch, with another superstar mix of “Million Dollar Bill” on its way from Peter Rauhofer (who’s already turned out another I Look To You track, “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” now playing via YouTube), our wayward diva is poised to welcomed back to the dance floor as if she’d never left. “If you feel good, if you’re feeling good, put one hand in the air.” Oh, yes. Yes, indeed. Welcome home, Whitney:
