Top ‘Gun’

It took a late-night fluke for me to finally hear the White Rabbits‘ “Percussion Gun,” out since May. After staying up on Sunday evening to write about the premiere of the new Michael Jackson tune, I went to bed around 1:30 am. But just as I was about to doze off, a propulsive tune coming out of the clock radio grabbed my ears.

I thought for sure it was Spoon, but Shazam set the record straight, tagging it as a song by White Rabbits. Doing some research later, Iit turns out I was sort of right; Spoon’s lead singer Britt Daniel produced the Brooklyn six-piece’s sophomore set, It’s Frightening. I’d even missed the band’s intensely propulsive performance of “Percussion Gun” on Letterman the night before the album’s release (and I’ve got a Late Show Season Pass set up on TiVo).

But so what if I’m five months tardy to this tribal-riffic party? I’m happily stuck on “Percussion Gun” (and in love with the lyric, “Where do you get off / And how can I get there, too?”), and by rights, you should be too:

This weekend, White Rabbits hops in the van to begin their fall tour. The sextet is set to visit 19 cities, including first-ever stops in Canada, while somehow managing to skip both New York City and Chicago this time around. To paraphrase another “White Rabbit,” logic seems to have fallen sloppy dead.
